Welcome to Curtiss Woodworking with a special opportunity for you to create a design for your won doors, cabinets, and drawers, also in Partnership with Meridian Products. We are committed to delivering top quality products and service delivering outstanding cabinetry at an exceptional value. Our quality starts with our people. Everyone on our team takes great pride in the quality of their work and the service they provide. Our professional woodworkers have the experience and a craftsman’s eye to ensure that every product meets our demanding standards – and exceeds your customers’ expectations. To achieve this level of quality, we use specially selected hardwoods and employ old-fashioned methods, like “hand matching” wood grain and color to create beautiful, highly durable products. We offer a wide selection of quality finishes in stains, paints, glazes, antiquing and distressing, with a custom color match. To ensure an attractive, long-lasting finish, we only use top quality materials that meet or surpass the KCMA endurance tests. We also utilize a catalyzed conversion varnish system for our sealer and topcoat to add toughness. • We warrant that our products will be free of defects in material and workmanship. Each piece of wood used in manufacturing our products is an “original” product of nature; therefore reasonable tolerance must be the rule in accepting grain patterns, color variations, mineral and other markings unique to the wood specie. These are natural characteristics and not defects. Below are four Downloads for you to use while designing your Cabinets, Doors and Drawers. You will find a lot of graphical imagery on these links. They can be opened via Stuffit Expander which can be downloaded free by allume.com. The Application used is Microsoft Word. AN IMPORTANT WORD ABOUT MOISTURE • Wood, as a natural product, is sensitive to moisture and climate conditions. • The absorption or release of moisture happens quickly and will cause wood to expand or contract as the humidity level changes. • The expansion or contraction of the wood could cause defects such as: – Open joints – Stile/Rail bowing – Unfinished lines on pre-finished products – Cracking – Warping/Twisting – Sizing variations – Excessive or insufficient spacing around pre-fitted products • Moisture-rich environments such as humid climates, waterfront properties, and non-air conditioned homes, etc., may create significant fluctuations in the wood and possibly cause defects in the product. • On mitre products with wide framing, the possibility of joint separation is significantly increased. If those products are painted, the joint separation becomes quite obvious.
Wood is a product of nature, its beauty and uniqueness are displayed in the variations of color tone and grain pattern. In each species there are a variety of natural characteristics (sap, knots, mineral, etc.).
Types of Wood: ALDER, RED Red Alder wood is almost white when cut but changes to a light tan or brown with a yellow or reddish tinge when exposed to the air. Heartwood is formed only in trees of advanced age and there is no visible boundary between heartwood and sapwood. ASH, AMERICAN The sapwood of ash is light brown while the heartwood is brown to grayish. Ash is normally straight grained, heavy, hard, strong, and stiff. It wears smooth with high shock resistance. Ash also splits easier and shrinks more than Maple, Cherry and Oak. BIRCH, AMERICAN The wood of yellow birch is heavy, hard and strong. The wood of paper birch is lighter and less hard, less strong and less stiff. All birches have a fine, uniform texture. Of all the birches, paper birch machines the best. Yellow birch has a white sapwood and light reddish-brown heartwood. Paper birch seems to have a more consistent whiter color than Yellow Birch. Meridian Products uses the paper birch for our white birch specifications and the heartwood from the yellow birch for our red birch specifications. CHERRY, BLACK The sapwood is light yellow to white and the heartwood is brownish with a green tinge which darkens upon exposure to a deep reddish brown with a golden luster. There is occasional pitch pockets and gum in the wood. HICKORY, TRUE HICKORY OR PECAN HICKORY The sapwood of hickory is white tinged with brown and the heartwood is pale reddish-brown. The wood is known for its strength and shock resistance. Hickory is difficult to machine. Meridian Products uses a blend of both the sapwood and heartwood in our products. LYPTUS Lyptus is a high-quality hardwood. Produced in Brazil and grown on renewable plantations. Lyptus is used as an alternative to mahogany and has a more consistent grain pattern. The color ranges from an off white to light brown to an orange. MAHOGANY, AFRICAN The heartwood is light pinkish brown, darkening to reddish-brown upon exposure. The sapwood is whitish or yellow. Texture is medium to coarse; grain is straight to interlocked, producing a striped figure appearance. MAPLE, HARD OR SOFT The wood of sugar maple is known as hard maple; the wood of the silver and red maple is known as soft maple. The sapwood of the maples is commonly white with a slight reddish-brown tinge. The heartwood is light reddish brown. Hard maple has a fine, uniform texture; it's heavy, strong , stiff, hard and resistant to shock. Soft maple resembles hard maple but is not as heavy, hard, or strong. Soft maple has more color variations. OAK, RED OR WHITE The sapwood of oak is white to very light brown. Heartwood is light to dark brown in the white oak group and reddish-brown in the red oak group. Oak wood has a course texture; its heavy, straight-grained, hard, tough, very stiff and strong. Meridian Products uses Northern red oak and Appalachian white oak. PINE, EASTERN WHITE (CLEAR OR KNOTTY) The heartwood of Eastern white pine is a light brown, sometimes with a reddish tinge, turning darker with exposure. The sapwood is white, tinged with yellow and has a uniform texture. POPLAR, YELLOW Yellow poplar sapwood is white, sometimes with stripes. The heartwood is unusually tan but can range from greenish-brown to dark green, purple, black, blue and yellow. The wood is straight-grained, uniform in texture, and moderate to light weight. WALNUT, BLACK The sapwood of black walnut is nearly white, while the heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, often with a purplish cast and darker streaks. The wood is heavy, hard and stiff
SELECT This product is designed to give minimal variation in colors and minimal amounts of natural wood characteristics. Select grade is recommended for clear or light color finishes. The product is hand selected for the best blend of colors and grain available at the time the product is manufactured. The colors in the panel will be matched as close as possible in a way that does not distract from the overall appearance. The color match between the panel and the framing may vary. Close attention will be given to grain matching in the panel to blend the grain direction with the available material. Curly or flame graining is only permitted on the face if it is hard to see and there are minimal color variations. This type of grain will be permitted on the back in unlimited amount and color. Sapwood/Heartwood will be controlled on the face of the product based off of what wood specie you select. Wood character marks will be strictly controlled in size and quantity so they blend well within the product. Defects such as cracks or shake in the wood is not permitted unless it can be repaired in a way that is transparent. Water stain is not permitted on the face. REGULAR This product is designed to allow a broader range of colors and a broader range of natural wood characteristics. Regular grade is recommended for medium to dark color finishes.
